Built in Collaborations , Driven by Fear…

Obscure (2004)

Obscure is a survival horror game that follows a group of high school students who return to their campus at night to search for a missing friend. What begins as a routine search quickly escalates into a fight for survival as they discover a series of horrifying experiments and a dark secret lurking beneath the school. Players must navigate through the school’s corridors, avoid or confront monstrous enemies, and unravel the mystery behind the sinister events threatening their lives.

Released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2 and later for PC, Obscure was developed by Hydravision Entertainment and published by MC2 France (also known as The Adventure Company for some regions). The game is notable for its emphasis on cooperative gameplay, allowing two players to team up locally to survive together. It combines traditional survival horror mechanics with a teen slasher inspired story, creating a tense, atmospheric experience that stands out among early 2000’s horror games.

Gameplay revolves around exploration, puzzle solving, and combat. Players control multiple characters, each with unique abilities, and can switch between them to solve puzzles or overcome obstacles. Combat is a mix of firearms and melee weapons, but ammunition is limited, encouraging strategic encounters. Health items are scarce, increasing tension. The cooperative mode allows a second player to join at any time, adding teamwork dynamics as players share resources and coordinate actions to survive.

Obscure features 3D environments with realistic character models and detailed school interiors. Lighting and shadows are used to create suspense, while atmospheric sound effects and a haunting soundtrack heighten the feeling of dread. The school setting is both familiar and unsettling, with classrooms, hallways, and hidden laboratories that contrast everyday life with the horrific events taking place. Monster designs are grotesque yet grounded, reinforcing the sense of danger lurking around every corner.

Obscure is significant for bringing cooperative gameplay to the survival horror genre in a meaningful way. By allowing players to experience horror with a partner, it introduced shared tension and strategy, influencing later games that explore multiplayer horror. Additionally, the combination of teen-slasher storytelling and survival mechanics created a fresh take on high school horror, making it a notable entry in the genre in the early 2000’s.

Upon release, Obscure received mixed reviews. Critics praised its cooperative gameplay and atmosphere, but some criticized its combat mechanics and predictable story. Over time, it has been appreciated for its unique approach to multiplayer horror and its attempt to merge slasher tropes with survival horror elements. It has since gained a cult following, particularly among fans of cooperative horror games.

Obscure was released on PlayStation 2 and PC, with physical copies moderately available on the secondhand market for console. the Game is currently available on Steam.
