Exclusive First Look: Heavy Metal Death Can Gameplay (Pre-Alpha Preview)

Written by El Joe / La Boveda

The team at Krufs Productions gave us exclusive access to the Pre-Alpha build of Heavy Metal Death Can, and I can confidently say this one hit all the classic survival horror hallmarks. And no, we’re not talking about the fast-paced action-horror style. We’re talking about the good old stuff: deliberate pacing, thick atmosphere, puzzle-solving, and that heavy sense of dread that defined the genre’s golden era.

Set entirely inside a submarine, Heavy Metal Death Can delivers claustrophobic tension like few games can. The narrow corridors, metallic echoes, and low humming of the machinery wrap around you, amplifying the feeling that you’re trapped deep beneath the ocean isolated, vulnerable, and being watched. It’s the perfect setting for a survival horror experience, and Krufs Productions absolutely leans into that.

From the fixed camera angles to the tank controls (can be switched to Relative), the sound design, and the environmental storytelling, everything feels crafted with intention. Every sound matters a faint drip, a footstep echoing behind you, or the distorted groan of metal in the distance. Even at this early stage, the character development and puzzle design stand out, creating a genuine sense of exploration and unease. On top of that is so easy to miss a shot! that it didn’t matter how many bullets I had in the clip I felt they were never going to be enough!

Toby, the creative mind behind the project, shared that the team visited a real submarine to capture the atmosphere authentically. They took photos and videos for reference, and even recorded footsteps, echoes, and ambient sounds directly inside the vessel. That commitment to realism pays off the audio and visual design make you feel like you’re trapped down there, struggling to survive.

And speaking of sound Krufs Productions is doing something truly unique. They’re using distorted electric guitars to create the game’s audio textures and Toby himself lends his own voice to produce the guttural monster growls. It’s a bold, creative approach that fuses music and horror in a way that feels fresh yet deeply primal.

This is just a Pre-Alpha, but it already shows enormous potential. If this early build is any indication, Heavy Metal Death Can might become the next cult favorite for fans of pure survival horror the kind that values atmosphere and immersion over constant action.

Krufs Productions isn’t just recreating old-school horror they’re evolving it. And after playing this build, all I can say is: we can’t wait to dive back into the depths when the full version surfaces.
