For fans of classic survival horror, the wait is almost over. Later this month, the demo for Inherited Shadows drops, giving players their first chance to step into a world where tension never lets up, and every choice could be a matter of life or death. Inspired by the legends of the genre, Inherited Shadows tells the story of Amanda, a young adult haunted by her mother’s absence, whose ordinary morning in 1999 turns into a nightmarish ordeal.
I had the chance to dive into the demo early, and it’s immediately clear that this game does an incredible job introducing its protagonist. Amanda feels real, and the environment around her reinforces the story in subtle but powerful ways an example of environmental storytelling done right. The game’s atmosphere is oppressive and unrelenting, making survival a true test of skill and nerves.
Combat is scarce, intense, and always feels like a last resort. Resources are limited, and evasion is often the better option, perfectly aligning with the philosophy from our Take on the genre that survival horror works best when you never feel fully in control. Stamina management adds another layer of tension, and encounters with relentless enemies keep you constantly on edge. One sequence even features a tense camera-hunting moment with a little girl a type of “spot the anomaly” challenge I normally avoid but here it feels completely natural, woven into the story instead of just a gimmick.
Puzzles are thoughtfully designed as well. Early elements that seem inconsequential like holes in the ground later reveal themselves as part of a boss battle crucial to progression, this game masters rewarding careful observation and memory without spoiling the fun. Even the menus evoke nostalgia for old-school point and click adventures, with innovative uses of “view” and “combine” mechanics that feel fresh yet familiar.
Having previously worked with developer Juan from Montseralint, I can attest to his clear vision of classic survival horror. The demo embodies that vision: every moment is designed to unsettle, challenge, and immerse the player. Inherited Shadows isn’t just a game you play it’s a horror experience you survive.
For fans of survival horror who crave tension, atmosphere, and smart design, this demo is a must-play. And judging by what I’ve experienced so far, the full game cannot come soon enough.
